London Marathon

It's a muggy rainy day here in London, yet the city is buzzing. The London Marathon is on! Most of the top runners have crossed the line now, and the crowds are about half-way through. Although I love to marvel at how anyone can run so quickly for so long, what really gets me is watching the 'regular' athletes struggle through.

The Marathon is a huge fundraising event for British charities and many people run on behalf of charities, donning a variety of costumes to do so. I've seen The Angel of the North (how anyone could run with such a sculpture on them is beyond me), a UK Mail parcel, and a rhino. You have to applaud the sheer bravery of someone willing to draw a rhino costume along London streets!

I'd love to run the Marathon. I even applied a few years ago, but it's super hard to get in. One day!

Me too Marsha. I love sports that push our limits, like mountain climbing. I find it so inspiring. And how about that Eddie, eh? (Izzard)
I'm saving my energy for walking Hadrian's Wall or a Wainwright's Walk.

Hard to get in? Do they judge by costume or something? How do they determine who gets in?

I'd heard before that it's hard to get in to the London Marathon, simply because a lot more people want to run it than they have space for, but I too wonder what the criterea are!

I can't understand people who want to run marathons. I don't even like to drive that far.

I think these big ones are hard to get in. Here, you have to run quickly in another race for charity. We had the Boston Marathon on 04/19 (Patriot's Day). I've never watched, but I've seen my husband run smaller races. Maybe I'll cross the bridge and watch next year.

Thanks for the pic. I had no idea the Marathon was hard to get into. I used to run 5 miles a day-when I was young. lol. I admire anyone who tries- cheers~

It's crazy how hard it is to get in. You have to enter a draw, or apply to run for a charity and agree to raise around £1000. But even if you apply for a charity it's not a guarantee!

Cr-azy!

Ken - Esher is not London. It's the stockbrokers' belt and a strange alternate universe where everyone is rich! :)
